Zoo human resources department telephone. “I didn’t understand how I would live on a lower salary, but I agreed” - Moscow Zoo keeper about his dismissal from the corporation

Everyone wants to do what they love and be financially secure because of it. The project “People outside the profession” provides support to everyone who is looking for a professional activity to their liking. And we tell...

As part of this material, Alisa Schaefer, the project editor, spent the day visiting the keeper of the Moscow Zoo Kirill Klyucharev and found out why he left corporations for the wild.

“I didn’t understand how I would live on a lower salary, but I agreed” - Moscow Zoo keeper about his dismissal from the corporation

Alice Schaefer

I approach my workplace, and they are already waiting for me

My position is called keeper (from “keep” - to take care), I work with great apes. The keeper must be sensitive and attentive to his charges, understand the animal’s condition and determine what it needs at the moment. I arrive at the zoo early in the morning, go through the checkpoint and head to the enclosure with great apes.

On the right, a giraffe has already woken up and come out, zebras are grazing a little further away, and you can hear birds singing. I approach my workplace, and they are already waiting for me. I peel the fruit, cut it, and go feed it.

I greet my charges, someone pinched me, someone I. And even if I got up on the wrong foot in the morning, here it is very quickly forgotten. You look around: lions, bears, wolves, tigers - as if you are not in Moscow at all, but somewhere in a nature reserve far from civilization. No bustle of the metropolis. It’s hard to call it work. About every day here, if there are no emergency situations, I can say: “Perfect!”

“Monkeys are Kirill, Kirill are monkeys”

Finding a common language with pets is not an easy task. Four years ago, when I first arrived, I was introduced to my students literally by the hand: “Monkeys are Kirill, Kirill are monkeys.” The latter reacted mostly aggressively.

For example, gorillas are group animals; the main male protects his own from anything that seems dangerous to him. Our male, his name is Vizuri and he weighs 220 kg, when he saw me, he ran up about five meters, rose to his feet and hit the bars with his fists with all his weight. Since our building was built in 1995, I was a little lost, hoping that the 22-year-old grating wouldn’t fall on me along with it and crush me.

The Moscow-Zelenograd train is rushing towards you towards this grid, and you are standing with a bowl of pears and thinking that the basin will definitely get crushed, but here you are... will you be able to get out from under it later?

I realized that I would never leave the zoo when Vizuri first began to allow the females to take food from me, and then they began to let the cubs come to me unattended. The moment when you feel that the animal has accepted you and gives you more rights than two weeks ago, and then even more, cannot be compared with any thirteenth salary.

This is a unique feeling that makes it worth coming here every day. And I'm coming. Not to work, but to my second family, to my loved ones, who have some hopes for me, who may also be in a bad mood in the morning, yell, spit, or something else.

Stealing is normal at my job.

Monkeys often steal for barter. If there is a gap under the grate into which you can tighten a hose, broom, dustpan or anything else, they will pull it in. Then, depending on the value, an exchange occurs, we have a whole program. The hose is 10 out of 10. Because the hose causes the most red tape: turn off the water, remove the end that goes into the plumbing system so that the faucet does not jerk - maximum leverage.

I come to the cage with a set of goodies that I will exchange for. You won’t get that much value for one banana; you’ll also need a cracker, and maybe a boiled egg, depending on your mood and the degree of “chewing.” Such pranks and characters do not get boring. We don't get tired of our loved ones, do we?

I also noticed that there are animals that catch you as part of the game. He caught you and released you, you him. It happens that you are grabbed by your T-shirt, and in order to free yourself, you have to leave it in the enclosure. And there are those who act through aggression.

One male, already a Barney orangutan, who to this day is wildly jealous of his females towards me and tries to harm me at every opportunity. I try to work with him as little as possible, because it is a huge stress for the animal, and he is really dangerous.

Extraordinary situations. What's unusual about your job?

1. Did you bring a magnet?

When one of us is away for a long time - sick or on vacation, and then he returns and starts work in the morning, all the inhabitants of the enclosure drop what they are doing, sit along the bars and look at him. We call this the question: “Did you bring the magnet?” They get used to us and notice our absence. However, whether they are bored or not, I don’t know.

2. We all have a baby

We have an infamous female orangutan named Lychee, who gave birth to several children in her life, and threw each one under the bars of keepers because she did not want to deal with the rigors of motherhood. Two years ago she gave birth to Mimi. We found her in the morning: a baby weighing 286 grams, who needed to be fed with formula, diluting it every 1.5 hours, with whom she needed to sleep, be held on her body, and much more.

Anyone who has had children will understand me. From scratch we took Mimi until she was two and a half years old. No one had any free time left. We even stopped using the word “day off” in everyday life. But this didn’t upset anyone, because we had a child.

Why a zoo?

Before the Moscow Zoo, I worked for nine years in a large company in a good position. I went to work on a schedule: eight hours a day, five days a week, pushing buttons, teaching others to do it. With a solid salary, I bought expensive things and drove a good car. But I didn’t like this business at all: I was always drawn to animals.

I didn’t go to study to become a veterinarian because I don’t have a penchant for exact sciences. Instead, I decided to earn money and help municipal shelters in my free time. This turned out to be not enough, and when I found out that the Moscow Zoo needed volunteers, I realized what I wanted. I worked for about a month in this position, after which I was offered a full-time position.

Naturally, I was tormented by doubts. Almost no one from my circle supported this idea. I did not have a suitable education, and due to my age I would not have gone to study somewhere. I didn’t know if I could handle all the responsibilities that would be entrusted to me without having the necessary experience behind me.

I didn’t understand how I would live on a lower salary, but I agreed anyway, and now I’ve completely stopped thinking about any social things like career growth, vacations, work shifts, bonuses. I feel so good and calm that I don’t need cars or expensive things. Doing what you love won’t doom you to poverty, you’ll just live differently. And your concept of success will most likely differ from the generally accepted one.

We think too much. We try to write down all the actions step by step, to take into account all the “what ifs,” but this is pointless. Moreover, we risk missing the only important chance. If you are ready to move into a new activity or have found something you like, try it. Because nothing can pay for giving up your dreams.

The Exotarium of the Moscow Zoo contains about 100 species of reef fish from the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans.

The large reef aquarium of the Exotarium displays a variety of coelenterates from the Indo-Malayan archipelago. Initially, they were introduced into the aquarium in the form of single small specimens, but today, constantly reproducing, the coelenterates have covered all the decorations of the aquarium. Along with corals and sea anemones, the aquarium contains tridacni and a variety of reef fish, of which the anemone fish and pseudanthias are especially noteworthy.

The Moscow Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. It was opened on January 31, 1864 according to the old style and was then called a zoo.
The Moscow Zoo was organized by the Imperial Russian Society for the Acclimatization of Animals and Plants. The beginning of its existence is associated with the remarkable names of Moscow University professors Karl Frantsevich Roulier, Anatoly Petrovich Bogdanov and Sergei Alekseevich Usov.
The area where the Old Territory of the Zoo is now located was called “Presnensky Ponds”. The rather wide Presnya River flowed here, and it was one of the favorite places for Muscovites to hang out - green hills, water meadows, and flowering gardens decorated the surrounding area. To create a zoo, this particular site was chosen by a majority vote of members of the Acclimatization Society, since it was within an accessible distance for all Muscovites, including the poor. The territory of the Petrovskaya Academy, for example, was more convenient and larger, but traveling there would be far and expensive for most potential visitors.
At the opening of the zoo, it contained 134 specimens of domestic animals, 153 specimens of wild animals and birds, and 7 specimens of reptiles. The Russian fauna was best represented: bears, wolves, foxes, badgers, ferrets, martens, hares, squirrels, hedgehogs, deer, falcons, hawks, eagle owls, owls, bustards, cranes, herons, ducks. The creators of the garden wanted to show the audience, first of all, our native nature. There were also exotic animals on display - 2 lions, a jaguar, 2 tigers, a leopard, a rhinoceros, an alligator.
The creators of the zoo had the goal not only of creating a publicly accessible educational and scientific institution, but also intended the practical use of the collection. Many domestic animals of the best breeds for that time were kept here, work was carried out on the acclimatization of foreign purebred animals to improve domestic breeds, all kinds of exhibitions of various domestic animals were constantly held, where Russian owners could not only get acquainted with the best world experience, but also purchase purebred animals.
In the center of a huge bustling city, in its original location, the zoo delights visitors with a new, modern, beautiful appearance and is always happy to welcome guests.

It is impossible to list all areas of activity of the Moscow Zoo in one essay. Therefore, we would like to refer interested readers to the book “Moscow Zoological Park. Pages of history." The book was published in 2004 by Eliis Lak 2000. It provides the most complete coverage of the history of the creation and development of the zoo and contains rich illustrative material, including unique archival photographs. The present day of the oldest zoological park in Russia, its work, which is usually hidden from the public eye, is also described in this book.

I think many of my peers had or have a desire to get a job. So, I want to share with you my first experience, dear readers.

So, first day
Woke up at 7.00. It's summer, hot, June. It seemed to me that I was the only one who got up so early today. I began to scold myself, because I started all this myself. I really wanted to sleep during the holidays. Having cheered up a little, I decided that I slowly needed to get used to such a life. I went out, the street, the subway was full of people. Everyone with suitcases and bags goes to work just like me. More precisely, it’s me now, like them, all adults. Although I'm only 15 years old. When they asked me why I came to them, I answered without hesitation: for the sake of money. I wanted so much! My first job was at a zoo. By position - landscaper. It was quite difficult to get settled. They generally don't take girls. “We have to mow the lawn, water the flowers, the technique is dangerous and difficult for the weaker sex,” they told me. Well, I really wanted to get my first work experience this summer. Persuaded. All that was part of my duties was to keep the flower beds clean, pull out weeds and... probably that’s all. At first I was happy. But I really wanted someone to appreciate the fruits of my labor. After all, they pay me money for this! I don't know where these feelings came from. But our senior landscaper quickly slowed me down, saying that I only need to take care of myself. After all, you feel so good, so keep quiet, no one will notice your efforts anyway. He told me this because I stood out very much among them. Everything was in accordance with the Labor Code. Exactly until 13.00 I worked without distractions, then exactly until 14.00 I rested, and then went on new assignments. And apparently, I was completely fed up with them or they just cared about me that way. If I told them that I had a headache or that I was tired, they would not hesitate to send me home. Although I know that you can plow and plow on me. In general, having finally decided that they didn’t really need me, I spent hours freezing (this had no effect on my salary). After all, they taught us, especially around us, after all, there was a lot to see.

Strange role
Negative point
And the weather in June was wonderful, there were a lot of visitors. It wouldn't be possible without friends either. Frankly, at the beginning I felt very awkward. Since I am an employee, I was given a branded green overalls, a T-shirt and a cap, and in my hands a hoe, pruning shears, and a garbage bag. And I felt like some kind of janitor. A bit of a strange role. And I had to suffer with this role. Questions about where to go were asked endlessly. And if I stood at some cage, there was generally boundless curiosity. What is the name of the animal, how was it brought to the zoo, or what kind of shrub is it? Could you tear off a branch and plant it at home? You can’t explain to everyone that you are not at all a biologist or a professional botanist, although you didn’t want to look stupid either. I had to remember some names and nicknames.
The Good Point, or Those Funny Giraffes
But soon I realized the beauty of my appearance. They let me in everywhere for free. I even went to see the elephants, which are currently kept outside the zoo. But, most importantly, I had favorites, on which I spent all my free time, and there was plenty of it. One day, on a good Monday, when the zoo had a day off and we were working, I was placed on the green lawn near the giraffes, which is in the second territory. There are two low barriers. And these animals, seeing that I was alone here, began to stretch their long necks towards me. At first I was afraid of their impressive size. But in vain, these are very kind and sweet animals. My feeding soon made us friends. For them, I tore off all the nearby trees (landscapers can), and then generally climbed into their enclosure (although there were still mad zebras and some kind of buffalo, but they were in houses). It seemed to me that they even remembered me and were happy about my arrival. The next day, when there were already visitors, everyone gathered around me and asked me to photograph the giraffes and were surprised that I was not afraid of them. And mothers told their little children, when they also wanted to go beyond the fence, that “this aunt just has the knowledge and experience of working with them, and the giraffe will bite you.”

They kill animals in the zoo!
Yes exactly. Just on a good day, Monday, the shooting of city birds took place. Some sparrows liked to feed for free from all sorts of crocodiles. But it was not there. For this they were killed and fed to predators. I also noticed that people really love turtles, only at first. And then they drag these giants to the zoo and ask the landscapers to release them into the pond. Where there are also mutant fish of huge sizes and, by the way, many come to look at them, some feed them like ducks, and some are not averse to catching them with improvised objects.

A small sketch
It was just interesting to walk around the zoo and watch people. They liked to repeat: “It’s been so long since I’ve been to the zoo.” There are still many artists who sat for hours and drew animals. Not a bad practice.

Other employees
There are not many Muscovites willing to get a permanent physical job for 4,000 rubles. I understood this because the rest of my colleagues were not Muscovites. Only one student and then in the evening after classes. Everything is clear with the students. I’ll tell you better about Irakli, he is also 15 years old. The truth is not great, he came to Moscow with his mother to earn money, and lives right next to the zoo. People periodically pester him because of his appearance, but he tries not to pay attention to it. In general, he is a very good character. Responsible and hardworking. But I felt sorry for him. Irakli liked to say that he needed money; he even got an additional job dismantling and assembling tents. And then he spent this money on all sorts of nonsense, asked my advice, and he himself bought some unnecessary videotapes that for some reason could not be rented, spent money on all sorts of chocolates, ice cream, etc. He cannot determine his purpose in life, but he never complained about his fate. He says he likes it here. Of course, he has already learned the zoo by heart, and yet he doesn’t need more. He says it himself. And it seems to me that he has a lot of energy that could be directed to something useful. I advised him to at least go to school for sports (he has good physical fitness), but he thinks that this requires a lot of money, and he cannot save. What can I say, he’s even scared to go outside. How can you live without friends on such similar weekdays?

Finally
In general, there were few negative aspects. Of course, your legs get tired, but it's useful. In the morning I got up and thought with horror that I would have to live like this all the time. True, my parents quickly reassured me, they say, you get used to it quickly and thoughts as stupid as they think no longer arise.
And of course, it’s a pleasant moment to receive money in an envelope, as expected. But if you ask me what I spent it on, I don’t remember - I remember that they were needed, but where did I send them? But I remember very well my favorite giraffes and the joy that I work for the sake of work.
