Interpretation of Tatyana’s dream (Based on the novel by A.S. Pushkin “Eugene Onegin”)

This was back in 1954. That year, the unification of male and female schools took place in the Soviet Union. Previously, we studied separately: girls in girls' schools, boys in boys' schools.

And so I ended up in one of the best schools in the city of Samarkand. We had a very good class. I still remember the boys and girls. And there were wonderful teachers, except... the teacher of Russian language and literature. Some kind of paradox: it seemed like there should have been a wonderful teacher, as they show in films now, but we got Ekaterina Stepanovna Mamontova. She herself looked like a mammoth, fat, unkempt, she always sat with her legs spread apart, pink leggings with a fleece were visible from under the hem, which caused laughter and quiet mockery from our boys.

And so we began to follow the “Eugene Onegin” program. At that time I could understand little from this novel, its deep essence,philosophy, however, I’m not alone. My love for the novel came later, when I became a student.But for now this is it for usthere was an obligation.

We were ordered one day to learn by heart any passage from Onegin. For some reason, everyone began to teach only “My uncle has the most honest rules...” or “Winter! Peasant, triumphant...”. But I wanted to learn “Tatiana’s Dream”. Apparently, some kind of romance was attractive then. I learned it, and I must say that I still remember it by heart! That's how strong the memory turned out to be! The next day in class, the teacher called me in and asked me to tell me what I had learned. I started reading. There was silence in the class, and only at the very end, with the words “Onegin quietly drags Tatyana into a corner And puts her on a shaky bench...” did the boys giggle. When she finished reading, our teacher was completely moved! She turned to me and said: “Lera, ask for whatever you want!” It was funny. What could an 8th grade student ask for? And then she herself suggested to me: “Lera, do you want me to put you with Dima Margolin?” And this boy, I must tell you, was the dream of all the girls in the class. Another girl was already sitting with him. And so our Mamontova, taking advantage of the fact that she was our class teacher, and I silently agreed to her proposal, puts me and Dima together! Poor Svetka, how she cried when she was put on another desk! And how pleased Dimka Margolin was, who then spent the whole year copying all my tests and essays! Alas, a year later he and his parents left. It was a military family. These are the memories I have associated with this “Dream”! And I wanted to write it today! To this day, the music of the verse literally fascinates me!

And Tatyana has a wonderful dream. She dreams that she is walking through a snowy meadow, surrounded by sad darkness; In the snowdrifts in front of her, a seething, dark and gray Stream, unfettered by winter, rustles and swirls with its waves; Two perches, glued together by an ice floe, a trembling, disastrous bridge, laid across the stream: And in front of the noisy abyss, full of bewilderment, she stopped. XII As if at an annoying separation, Tatyana grumbles about the stream; She doesn’t see anyone who would give her a hand from the other side; But suddenly the snowdrift began to move, and who appeared from under it? A big, disheveled bear; Tatiana Oh! and he roared, And extended his paw with sharp claws to Her; She braced herself with a trembling hand and with timid steps crossed the stream; I went - so what? the bear is behind her!

When she came to her senses, Tatyana looked: There was no bear; she is in the hallway; Outside the door there is a cry and the clink of a glass, Like at a big funeral; Not seeing a single bit of sense here, She looks quietly through the crack, And what does she see?.. at the table Monsters are sitting all around: One with horns with a dog's muzzle, Another with a rooster's head, Here is a witch with a goat's beard, Here is a prim and proud skeleton, There is a dwarf with a tail, and here is a half-crane and a half-cat. XVII Even more terrible, even more wonderful: Here is a crab riding on a spider, Here is a skull on a goose's neck Spinning in a red cap, Here is a mill dancing in a squat position And cracking and flapping its wings; Barking, laughing, singing, whistling and clapping, People's rumors and horse tramping! But what did Tatyana think when she recognized among the guests the One who is dear and scary to her, the Hero of our novel! Onegin sits at the table and looks at the door furtively. And Tanya is not so terrible, And now the curious one opened the door a little... Suddenly the wind blew, extinguishing the Fire of the night lamps; The gang of brownies became confused; Onegin, his eyes sparkling, rises from the table thundering; Everyone stood up; he goes to the door.


And she’s scared: and Tatyana hastily tries to run: There’s no way; Impatiently Tossing about, wants to scream: He can’t; Eugene pushed the door: And a maiden appeared to the eyes of the hellish ghosts; furious laughter rang out wildly; the eyes of everyone, Hooves, crooked trunks, Tufted tails, fangs, Mustaches, bloody tongues, Horns and bone fingers, Everything points to her, And everyone shouts: mine! my!

Tatyana Larina's dream and its meaning.
In the novel “Eugene Onegin” A.S. Pushkin created a reliable picture of Russian life at the beginning of the 19th century. Using many techniques, Pushkin reveals to us the images of the novel's heroes as fully as possible: with the help of their relationship to each other, to others, to nature, introducing the author's assessments and lyrical digressions.

Tatyana embodied the author’s “sweet ideal”; she is dear to Pushkin, so he tries to show us the deepest, most intimate depths of her spiritual makeup. That is why, to understand the poet’s intention, it is important to analyze Tatyana’s dream. We know that
Tatyana believed the legends
Of common folk antiquity,
And dreams, and card fortune-telling,
And the predictions of the moon.
Therefore, the dream on the night when the girl decided to cast a spell, in the hope of finding out her betrothed and her future, is especially interesting to us. Before the divination, Tatyana “suddenly became scared,” and this fear, an incomprehensible anxiety before the unknown, settles in our hearts for the entire time of her sleep.
Tatyana's dream replaces Pushkin's detailed analysis of her inner world; this is the key to understanding her soul. Here you can find images of sentimental novels beloved by girls: hence Onegin’s mysterious power over werewolves, his tenderness combined with terrible destructive power. However, the main content of the dream is woven on the basis of folk ideas, folklore, fairy tales, and legends.
At the very beginning of the dream, Tatyana, walking through a snowy clearing, “surrounded by a sad darkness,” encounters a symbolic obstacle:

An old hero from Russian folk tales, “a big, disheveled bear,” helps her cross the stream. He first pursues the girl, and then takes her to the “wretched” hut, where Tatyana meets her lover, but in what company!

The dormant anxiety emerges with renewed vigor, and we find ourselves witnessing a tragedy:
The argument is louder, louder; suddenly Evgeny grabs a long knife, and Lensky is instantly defeated...
Tatyana wakes up in horror, trying to comprehend what she has seen, not yet suspecting how prophetic her dream will turn out to be. The expectation of trouble, which did not disappear, but strengthened after the heroine’s awakening, does not leave us during Tatyana’s subsequent name day. First, the guests gather - provincial nobles, with their base desires, extinguished feelings, small hearts. Onegin’s “strange” behavior at the Larins’, his courtship of Olga leads to disaster - a duel between two friends, Onegin and Lensky. And here, after Tatyana’s terrible dream, the feast can be regarded as a wake for Lensky.
Thus, natural intuition and subtle mental organization helped Tatyana, ahead of her time, to anticipate events that were yet to happen and bring tragedy into her life, since they would not only internally separate her forever from her loved one and serve as a barrier between their future relationships, but also will bring grief to many other people: Olga - short-lived loneliness, Lensky - death, and Onegin himself - mental discord with himself.

And Tatyana has a wonderful dream.

Note that in the dream sequence, Tatyana walks, “surrounded by a sad darkness.” The path that Tatyana takes is a symbol of her life path. Her path is unclear, because... There is darkness all around. A sudden obstacle - a stream - symbolizes life's difficulties, namely the upcoming separation from Onegin. The bridge that makes it possible to cross the stream is very fragile, and Tatyana is left alone with her difficulties, without hope of resolving them. “She doesn’t see anyone who would give her a hand on the other side.”

The image of a bear symbolizes the fate and difficult trials that lie ahead for Tatyana. It is the bear who helps the girl cross the stream. Then he begins to chase the girl, but Tatyana “cannot escape from the shaggy footman.” After all, you cannot run away from fate, you cannot run away from human trials prepared for you. In the end, it is he, the bear, who brings the girl to the mysterious hut with monsters.

Ugly monsters are phantasmagoric images of dreams. The monsters are sitting at the table. Their frightening features and absurdity reach the limit: “One has horns with a dog’s face, the other with a rooster’s head,” “here is a cancer riding a spider.” Both the monsters and the feast are disgusting; it is no coincidence that the clinking of glasses is compared to a funeral. Vanity, movement, turmoil are conveyed through a stream of nouns with the meaning of action, listed separated by commas (non-union): “Barking, laughing, singing, whistling and clapping, people’s rumors and horse tramping.”

Onegin's role in the dream sequence is great. He behaves confidently, all the monsters obey him: “He gives a sign - and everyone laughs, he drinks - everyone drinks and everyone screams.” It is Onegin who saves Tatiana from monsters.

You can notice that the episode of Tatiana’s dream has something in common with the subsequent episode of the name day. Before the name day, just as in the dream scene, turmoil reigns. This is again conveyed by a stream of nouns: “The barking of moseks, the smacking of girls, noise, laughter, the crush at the threshold, bows, the shuffling of guests, the cry of nurses and the crying of children.” As in the dream, on name days guests sit at the table, again “plates and cutlery rattle and glasses clink.” A reader's association arises: the Larins' guests are also monsters.

The parallels between guests and monsters are shown quite clearly. For example, the monster “with a rooster’s head” and “county dandy Petushkov.” The Larins' guests are typical representatives of the nobility who have no purpose in life. It is not surprising that the names oh are symbolized by fantastic monsters.

The images of Onegin in a dream and on his name day are also very similar. In both cases, Onegin behaves calmly and with dignity.

Tatyana's behavior in her sleep and on her name day are similar. In Tatyana’s dream, she experiences fear and confusion: “She’s scared, and Tatyana’s haste is trying to run away.” This feeling is similar to the sensations at name days, when a girl is “a little alive” at the sight of Onegin.

Conclusion: episodes like the dream sequence complicate the composition of the novel, more clearly emphasizing its originality.

1) The dream episode helps the reader’s perception of the name day scene, as if preparing us for reading it.

2) With the help of images from a dream, the author’s ironic attitude towards the heroes of reality (in this case, the guests of the Larins) is conveyed.

3) The ending of the dream contributes to the movement of the action of the entire novel, because is prophetic for the main characters.
