Pentacles occupy a special niche in magic. Pentacle is translated as a magical figure, symbol, sign, seal. Round talismans are able to protect their owner, bring wealth, love, fame, power, luck, protect things from damage and much more. It all depends on what magical sign is applied to them. The simplest pentacle as a talisman is a five-pointed star, a pentagram.

No less popular is the hexagram, better known as the Seal of Solomon or the Star of David - a hexagonal star that is formed from two equilateral triangles superimposed on each other.

Historical reference

Originally, a pentacle is a talisman on which a pentagram or hexagram is applied along with other magical symbols, necessarily enclosed in a circle. The history of the magical symbol dates back to approximately 3500 BC. e. This is exactly how old, according to scientists, the most ancient pentagrams found during excavations in the city of Uruk. At the same time, the symbol is found in different cultures, many stories and legends are associated with it:

Types and meaning of pentacles

As already mentioned, the traditional component of the pentacle is the pentagram. It is supplemented by various cabalistic signs, symbols, and letters, depending on what forces the magician is calling upon. Most often, the inscriptions are written in Hebrew, as it was in ancient times. The names of the Gods can be encrypted in the pentacle, and sometimes lines from the holy scriptures can be inscribed. It happens that the talisman is filled with the names of archangels, angels in Latin or symbols of planets, totem animals.

There are a great many varieties of pentacles. Experienced magicians can create their own, new ones, as well as personalized ones, individually for a person. Let's look at the main, most common types of talismans and their meaning:

On some pentacles, as we see, the image of the pentagram is missing. This in no way diminishes the abilities of the magical talisman. What is more important is the correctness and clarity of drawing lines. Pentacles are made from paper, wax, clay, and sometimes other materials, depending on the goals pursued, as well as the chosen magical assistant. To protect their owner, symbols are applied to plates of copper, silver, and less often gold.

The pentagram can be inscribed on the ground, the front door, personal belongings, kitchen utensils. The choice of pentacle depends on the desired effect. It is best if the magical thing is selected and made by a magician, taking into account individual characteristics and with skill.

Any pentacle acts as a link between the subtle world of spirits, the Cosmos and its owner. There are known talismans on which the following was written: “Let the wearer sing in the most tender, subtle voice.” You can wish for anything.

As for creating an amulet, it needs to be made in a special way, on a certain day and on a certain material. It is extremely difficult for an uninitiated person to do this. You need knowledge that is known only to a close circle of people. It’s easier to buy a pentacle in a magic shop, a special website, or at a personal reception.

Features of use

Like other personal magical items, pentacles are not allowed to be handed over to strangers. They are usually worn on the body or kept at home in a place hidden from prying eyes.

To attract wealth, a pentagram is kept near money, for love - next to the heart or on the ring finger, rings are worn for power, and to protect the house, a talisman is placed at the front door and windows. To protect the car, the pentacle is hidden in the glove compartment or in any other place, next to the driver’s seat; less often, the pentogram is applied to the outside of the car. Story

The first known images of the pentagram date back to around 3500 BC. BC, these are five-pointed stars drawn on clay, found in the ruins of the ancient city of Uruk. Images of pentagrams are also found on Egyptian statues. As Arthur Waite reports in his New Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, the Egyptians called the pentagram “the star of dog-headed Anubis.”

Already in ancient times, the pentagram was interpreted in two ways. On the one hand, the pentagram was widely known as a sign that protects against all evil; the belief in its protective properties was so deep that in Ancient Babylon it was depicted on the doors of shops and warehouses to protect goods from damage and theft. But on the other hand, for initiates the pentagram was a powerful sign of power over the earthly world. So in Babylon, for example, this sign is often found on royal seals, and, according to modern scientists, it personified “the power of the ruler, extending to all four corners of the world.”

The Jews associated the pentagram with their sacred Pentateuch, received by Moses from God. The ancient Greeks called the pentagram Pentalpha, which means "five letters alpha", since the symbol can be resolved into alpha five times. For early Christians, the pentagram was a reminder of the five wounds of Christ: from the crown of thorns on his forehead, from the nails in his hands and feet.

Apparently, the first to speak about the pentagram as a symbol of the entire earthly world were the Pythagoreans, who taught that the world consists of five interconnected elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Ether). To reflect this doctrine, five letters were depicted around the pentagram:

  • ύ - ύδωρ, symbolizing water;
  • Γ - Γαια, symbolizing the earth;
  • ί - ίδέα, symbolizing the idea, according to another version - ίερόν (temple);
  • έ - έιλή, symbolizing fire;
  • ά - άήρ, symbolizing air.

The pentagram is also found on Gnostic talismans as a symbol of intellectual omnipotence.

According to the famous Kabbalah researcher Gershom Scholem, the magicians of medieval Europe learned about the pentagram under the name “the seal of King Solomon” from Arabic manuscripts.

In Arab magic, the “seal of Solomon” was widely used, but initially it, enclosed in a circle, was relatively rare. Even then, hexagram and pentagram were used interchangeably, and the name ["seal of King Solomon"] applied to both figures.

During the Renaissance, another secret of the pentagram was revealed. If you inscribe a human figure into it, connecting it with the five elements (Fire, Water, Air, Earth and Spirit), you will get an image of a microcosm - a sign of occult Spiritual Work on the material plane. The famous magician Cornelius Agrippa first wrote openly about this in 1531 in the second book of his Occult Philosophy. At the same time, there is an opinion that the connection of the inverted pentagram with Satan is a trap that Eliphas Levi left in his work. This version is supported, among other things, by the fact that at the beginning of the history of Christianity the inverted pentagram was interpreted as a symbol of the Transfiguration of Christ. It is the inverted pentagram that appears on the seal of the Roman Emperor Constantine, who made Christianity the state religion and was canonized by the Church for this.

The answer to this interpretation should be sought in the works of ancient Kabbalists. According to them, the inverted pentagram is “Zeir Anpin”, microprosop or “Small Face” of the Lord, which is formed on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life by the six lower Sephiroth: Hesed-Geburah-Tiferet-Netzach-Hod-Yesod. At the same time, “Zeir Anpin” is called Tiphareth, the Divine Son, through the union with whom our world could be saved.

Order of Pentacles

♦ The seven pentacles dedicated to Saturn are black.

It should be inscribed on sheepskin paper or virgin parchment, which paper should be colored green. The circle containing the 72 divine letters must be red, but the letters can also be gold. All the letters within the pentacle should be of the same red or sky blue color, but the great name of God should be inscribed in gold. Saturn

Third Pentacle of the Moon. If you constantly carry it with you while traveling, it will serve as protection against all night attacks and against all dangers and disasters associated with water.

Fourth Pentacle of the Moon. He will protect you from all evil misfortunes and from all damage to soul and body. His angel Sophiel bestows knowledge of the properties of all herbs and stones, and to those who call on him, he will reveal all this knowledge.

This pentacle and its description are contained only in Mich. 276 and Aub. 24. Obviously this is some version of "Sigillum Dei Aemeth". Mathers's edition gives instead the Great Pentacle of Solomon from Lansdowne 1202 and 1203 (see page &) with the following note: “This is the Secret Figure of Solomon. It appears in only two manuscripts (Lansdowne 1202 and 1203). It is given by Eliphas Levi in ​​his work “The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic” and by Tycho Brahe in his “Calendarium Naturale Magicum”, but in both cases without Hebrew words and letters (probably because it turned out to be impossible to make out them due to distortions introduced illiterate scribes). After much work and careful study of this figure, I came to the conclusion that the words inside the symbol stand for the ten Sephiroth, arranged in the form of the Tree of Life, to the right and left of which is the name of Solomon; the signs arranged in a circle are the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. "Sigillum Dei Aemeth" ("Seal of the God of Truth") is a Kabbalistic seal first depicted in a 14th-century grimoire. "Liber iuratus" and became famous thanks to the works of John Dee, an English occultist of the 16th century.

Calendarium Naturale Magicum Perpetuum (Perpetual Magical Calendar) is a collection of calendar engravings with magical correspondences, first published in 1620. The creator of the Calendar was actually Johann Baptist Großschedel (1577 - after 1630), but, according to him, the work used calendars compiled by Tycho Brahe.

The pentacles are not numbered in the manuscripts, and only in the Lansdowne manuscripts 1202 and 1203 are most of them distributed by planets. This pentacle is given in Agrippa's Occult Philosophy (Book III, Chapter XI). In Aub. 24, Add. 10862 and Mich. 276 it is also placed first in the row of pentacles, and in W. 4670 it is seventeenth. The third divine name in the manuscripts is distorted and in most cases is given in the form IRAH; there are variants IZAH, IVAH and IARL. The Hebrew letters inside the square are the four great four letter names of God:יהוה – Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh;אדני - Adonai; ייאי - Iiai) (this name has the same numerical value as the name El) andאהיה - Eheye. The Hebrew saying surrounding the square is taken from Ps. 71:9: “The inhabitants of the desert will fall before him, and his enemies will lick the dust” [“Posuerunt in caelum os suum et lingua eorum transivit in terra”]. - Note S.L. In Agrippa (op. cit.), this pentacle contains another saying and is described as follows: “...Rabbi Hamai in his “Book of Speculation” [“Sefer Ha-Iyun”, XIII century] gives<…>sacred seal,<…>effective against any human ailments and against all sorrows. On its front side there are four names of God, inscribed in square cells, from top to bottom, and the inscription in the ring around them reveals their meaning [יהוה אלהיכו יהוה אכד , “IHVH our God is IHVH one,” Mark. 12:29]. On the reverse side is the seven-letter name Ararita and in the ring around it is its interpretation, namely, the verse from which this name is extracted [אחד ראש אחותו ראש ייחורו תמורתו אחד , “one is the beginning of His unity, one is the beginning of His personality, one is His transformation”]. This is the famous square:

The most perfect arrangement of letters of all known double acrostics. It is mentioned several times in medieval magical texts, but until now only very, very few people knew that it comes from this pentacle. It immediately strikes the eye that this is the square of the number five, consisting of twenty-five letters, which, when added to one, give twenty-six - the numerical value of יהוה. The Hebrew saying surrounding the square is taken from Ps. 71:8: “He will possess from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth” [“Et dominabitur a mari usque ad mare et a flumine usque ad terminos orbis terrarum”]. In the original this verse also consists of twenty-five letters, and its total numerical value (including the final letters), when added to the number of the name Elohim, is exactly equal to the numerical value of the twenty-five letters composing the given square. - Note S.L. The signs at the ends of the rays of this mystical wheel are the magical signs of Saturn. Around the circle are the names of the angels: Omeliel, Anachiel, Arauchiah and Anazachia, written in Hebrew letters. - Note S.L. Mathers.

The Hebrew words surrounding the triangle are from Deut. 6:4: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.” The saying written in a circle is taken from Ps. 108:18: “Let him be clothed with the curse as with a robe, and let it enter like water into his bowels and like oil into his bones.” ossibus eius"]. The Hebrew letters in the corners between the arms of the cross spell out the name Yod-He-Vav-He. The letters in the corners of the square are the name Eloa. On the four sides of the square are written the names of the angels: Arehanah, Rahaniel, Roelhaiphar and Noaphiel.
